Smaak is built on the idea that your cooking life belongs to you — not to us. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. We have written it plainly. If something is unclear, write to us.
Who we are
Smaak is developed and operated by a small independent studio based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. We are the data controller for any personal data described in this policy.

The free app — what we collect
The free tier of Smaak requires no account and collects no personal data from you. Everything you add — recipes, pantry items, your meal plan, your shopping list, your cook history — stays on your device. None of it is transmitted to our servers, and none of it is accessible to us.
We do not use crash-reporting services, behavioural analytics, or third-party SDKs that report data back to anyone. What happens inside the free app stays inside the app.
Smaak Pro — what we collect
To subscribe to Pro, you sign in with your Apple or Google account. That sign-in gives us the following:
- Your name and email address, provided by Apple or Google. Your email identifies your account, enables you to recover access, and is used to contact you about your subscription if needed. It is not used for marketing, and it is not shared with third parties.
- Your recipes and related data — ingredients, steps, photos, your weekly planner, cook history, and household profiles. This data is encrypted and stored on our servers so your library syncs across your devices. It exists solely for you. We do not read it, analyse it, sell it, or use it for any purpose other than delivering the sync you subscribed for.
Household profiles. If you add household members within the app — names and dietary preferences — that information is stored as part of your account data and treated with the same care as your recipes.
Subscription billing. Smaak Pro is purchased through Apple's App Store. We never see your payment card details. Apple processes and manages billing; their privacy policy governs that data.
Messages you send us
When you write to us through the contact page or by email, we receive your name, email address, and message. We use this only to reply. We do not add you to mailing lists, pass your details to third parties, or keep your message beyond what is needed to resolve your question.
This website
smaak.food does not use tracking cookies, advertising pixels, or analytics services. We do not collect data about how you browse or where you arrive from.
We load fonts from Google Fonts. When your browser requests a page here, it makes a connection to Google's servers for font files. Google may log that connection as part of standard infrastructure operation; their privacy policy governs it.
Third-party services
The following services are involved in delivering Smaak Pro. Each acts as a data processor on our behalf and is contractually bound not to use your data for any other purpose.
- Apple Sign-In — authentication for Pro accounts. Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Google Sign-In — authentication for Pro accounts. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
- Cloud infrastructure — your encrypted recipe data is stored with a European cloud provider. They cannot access or read your data; they only store the encrypted bytes that Smaak sends them.
How long we keep your data
- Free users: we hold no data about you.
- Pro accounts: your data is retained for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your data is deleted from our servers within 30 days.
- Contact messages: retained until your question is resolved, then deleted.
Your rights
Under the GDPR and applicable data protection law, you have the right to:
- Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Delete your data. Pro users can do this from the account screen in the app. Anyone can request deletion by emailing us.
- Export your recipes. Your library can be exported from the app at any time — your recipes are yours to take with you.
- Restrict or object to how we process your data.
- Lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) if you believe we have handled your data unlawfully.

Children
Smaak is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU/EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to this policy
If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. For Pro users, we will also send a brief note by email. Continuing to use the app after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
