The short answers,
before you ask.
Most of what people want to know about Smaak, in one place. If your question isn't here, a real person is a message away.
Getting started
Do I need an account to use Smaak?
No. Open the app and start adding recipes — there is no sign-up wall, no email to verify, nothing between you and your first recipe.
An account is only needed if you subscribe to Pro. Sign-in is via Apple or Google — no new password to create, just one tap. The moment you stop paying, your recipes stay on your device exactly as you left them.
How do I get my recipes into Smaak?
Free users can add recipes by hand or photograph a handwritten card — including the one from 1987 that is barely legible. Smaak reads it.
Smaak Pro adds one-tap import from any recipe link on the web: paste a URL and the recipe lands in your library, ready to edit. However a recipe arrives, it becomes yours — searchable, editable, and organised the way you actually cook.
Does Smaak work offline?
Yes. Your recipes live on your device and open with or without a connection. Smaak Pro adds optional private cloud sync across devices, but the app itself never needs the internet to work.
What does it cost to start?
Nothing. The full app — library, planner, shopping list, Cooking Mode, and cook history — is free, with no ads. Pro is optional and adds sync across devices.
Pricing & Smaak Pro
What is the difference between free and Pro?
Free is the complete app, not a trial. You can collect, plan, shop, cook, and keep a history without paying anything.
Pro adds private cloud sync across devices, automatic encrypted backup, one-tap import from any recipe link, and deeper seasonal history. Subscribing requires a free account — you sign in with Apple or Google, so there is no new password to remember. It is for cooks who want their library safe and available on more than one device.
How much is Pro?
$4.99 a month, or $34.99 a year. No lifetime tier and no upsells inside the app.
Is there a free trial?
No trial gimmicks. The free app is genuinely complete, so there is nothing to unlock by starting a clock. If Pro is for you, subscribe; cancel any time.
If I stop paying for Pro, do I lose my recipes?
No. Your recipes are yours whether you pay or not. Pro keeps them synced and backed up; without it, they simply stay on your device, exactly as you left them.
Your recipes & your data
Do you show ads?
No. Your kitchen is not advertising space, and it never will be. Smaak is paid for by Pro subscriptions, not by your attention.
Do you track me or sell my data?
No. There is no analytics sold on to third parties and no account required to start. Your cooking life is not a product we resell.
Where are my recipes stored?
On your device, inside the app. With Pro, an encrypted copy syncs to private cloud storage so your library follows you to a new phone or a second device.
What happens to my recipes if I leave?
They stay yours. If you ever stop using Smaak, your recipes export with you — no hostage-taking, no walled garden.
How Smaak works
How does meal planning work?
Drag the recipes you want into the days ahead. Smaak handles the rest — assembling the shopping list and making sure Tuesday isn’t last Tuesday again.
Does the shopping list really build itself?
Yes. Plan your meals and the list assembles itself: consolidated across recipes, grouped by aisle, with the staples you already have checked off. Tick things as you go; undo a tap if you change your mind.
Can Smaak suggest what to cook tonight?
It can. Tell Smaak the time you have, what is in the fridge, and who is eating, and it pulls a recipe from your own collection — not someone else’s favourites, and not an ad for a meal kit.
Can I plan around the people I cook for?
Yes. Add the people at your table — their names, what they will eat, and what they won’t — and suggestions account for the whole household. The first profile is free; additional household members are part of Pro.
What is Cooking Mode?
A fullscreen, distraction-free view for the stove: one step at a time, large text, and a serving stepper that scales the ingredients as you go. Mark a meal as cooked and it logs to your history automatically.
Devices & platforms
When is Android coming?
It is in the works. Leave your email through any download link and we will tell you the day it lands — nothing else.
Can I use Smaak on more than one device?
With Pro, your library syncs across your devices through private cloud sync, so a new phone picks up exactly where the old one left off. Without Pro, Smaak lives on the one device you installed it on.
Is there an iPad or web version?
Smaak is an iPhone app today, with Android on the way. An iPad and web home for your recipes is something we would like to build — it is not here yet.
Account & support
How do I get in touch?
Write to us. A real person reads every message — no ticket queues, no bots reading first. Email [email protected] or use the contact page. We usually reply within a day or two.
How do I delete my account and data?
If you signed in for Pro, you can delete your account and everything stored on our servers from the account screen in the app. Recipes kept on your device stay until you remove them or delete the app.
Ask us anything else.
We read every message, and a real person writes back — usually within a day or two.
